Introduction

According to Iqaluit Dental Clinic, a dental emergency like a gum or teeth injury can become very serious and shouldn’t be ignored under any circumstances. However, most people don’t know what to do during a dental emergency. Let’s figure out how you can manage a dental emergency.

The Details

1. Toothaches – When you have a toothache, thoroughly rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove stuck food particles. If the mouth is swollen, apply a cold press to the cheek, over the affected area. If you plan to use painkillers like aspirin, make sure to swallow it without making it touch your gums or the affected area. Otherwise, you may burn your gum tissue. Next, book an appointment with your dentist.

2. Broken or chipped tooth – When you have a broken or chipped tooth, find all the broken or chipped fragments and put them inside a container with milk. Next, rinse your mouth with warm water and rinse out any broken pieces and transfer them to the container with milk. If there’s any bleeding, control it by applying pressure over that area with clean gauze.

Keep at it till the bleeding stops. To control swelling and relieve pain, apply a cold compress to the lip, cheek or part of your mouth that sits above the chipped tooth. See the dentist as soon as possible. If you’re quick enough, your dentist can reattach those broken pieces of tooth and help you avoid expensive dental procedures.

3. Knocked-out tooth – Hold the knocked-out tooth by the crown and rinse it off with water if it seems dirty. Don’t remove any attached tissue fragments from the tooth when you’re rinsing it. Next, try to put the broken tooth back in place. Don’t try to force it in the socket with excess pressure.

If the tooth can’t be placed in the socket, hold it in your mouth while you drive to the dentist. Otherwise, you can put it in a container with milk. Similar to the situation with a chipped tooth, a knocked-out tooth can be saved if you see the dentist quickly. If the dentist is able to put the broken tooth back in the socket within an hour, you have the highest chance of saving the tooth.

4. Objects caught between the teeth – Get the thinnest dental floss and try to gently and carefully dislodge the stuck object from the teeth. Don’t be too hasty or use excessive force. Otherwise, it may lead to a teeth injury or cause bleeding of the gums. Don’t use sharp objects like metal pins either. If the object can’t be removed, you need to see the dentist.

Conclusion

Iqaluit Dental Clinic suggests that you use the above-mentioned tips to manage a dental emergency calmly and with caution. Contact your dentist and book an emergency appointment as soon as possible. If you’ve lost a tooth, preserve it or its broken pieces, stop the bleeding and rush to the ER if necessary.
